Despite my utter hatred for cliche Hollywoodized movies, Ready Player One seems to be an exception. Spielberg’s passion for this film really tied everything together. Despite fairly cheesy dialogue, cliche plot points, a plague of nostalgic references, sketchy supporting actors, and cringe-worthy fight scenes, Ready Player One left me completely satisfied.
I tend to be a harsh critic (hence the aforementioned list of failures this movie has) but the pros seem to outweigh the cons in this particular situation. The Spielbergian directing style, classic film-esc cinematography, impressive animation, practically perfect comedic timing, and the heartwarming finale practically forced me into greatly enjoying the film. Although I can confidently say the majority of the scenes from Ready Player One are extremely engaging, one scene in particular absolutely blew my mind… But not one of scenes one might expect.
There are mind blowing recreations of shots from Stanley Kubrick’s, The Shining that I couldn’t help but grin during the entirety of due to the complexities and impressiveness of the recreations. *SPOILER OVER*
Ready Player One is a heartwarming nostalgia-fest that any individual with an open mind will enjoy, despite its numerous faults.
